What is an ABLE Account?

Submitted by Rick Hynick, Director, Client and Family Advocacy (GAO)

Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) is an act that provides tax-advantage savings accounts to individuals with significant disabilities.  The act limits eligibility to individuals who have had the onset of their disability prior to turning 26 years of age, but could be of any age to be involved.  Having an ABLE savings account does not affect the ability to receive public benefits from sources such as Medicaid.  A person can also live in any state and take advantage of the program.  For more information, contact the ABLE Resource Center, managed by the National Disability Institute at [email protected].
